HD video with live music and perfomance.&#38;nbsp;2022

First show at Kunstnernes Hus Cinema May 2022.&#38;nbsp;Together with musician and composer Simen Korsmo Robertsen, visual artist Iselin Linstad Hauge has created a new work between visual art, performance and music. This is a screening with live music, lyrics and film, which is only shown this one evening and exclusively at Kunstnernes Hus Cinema.
The performance is based on the phrase "I am a creature of the mud, not the sky", from the book When Species Meet by the philosopher and biologist Donna Haraway. With a material Linstad Hauge has filmed over several years, live music, text and film are intertwined in a study of the relationship between the human body and other animal bodies, where language, the search for connections and the fascination for colours and spontaneity are central.

The starting point for The boundary object is a specific physical act in the relationship between humans and domesticated animals: the human touching the animal body, petting it, and the animal being touch. We share this close relationship with our cats and dogs, touching bodies as a way of bonding and an act of caring and appreciation (often love). The boundary object relates to this act, highlighting another relation, namely the distant but still so attached relationship between humans and animals in agriculture.&#38;nbsp;

In the work Looking at you, it is the gaze, the relationship between the beholder and the one beeing looked at, that is examined. Which animals we choose to preserve or capture for viewing is often governed by aesthetic principles. The encounter with the lizard also points to something primal, something foreign, something other than "us". The text in the video is based on the essay Why look at animals by John Berger, which in turn refers to the balance of power between humans and animals.

“Part of caring about a being is to be curious about it, to position our self and ourselves towards it in a motion of attentiveness, bewitchment, and willingness to know and learn, and, finally, to enter into responsibility for its wellbeing.”&#38;nbsp; - Donna Haraway

In the work Labor of Love, I was interested in creating a space for becoming attentive, challenging and encouraging the “art of noticing,” in Anna Tsing's words. A gaze lodged between looking at and becoming with.&#38;nbsp;

The choice of which animals we choose to preserve is often guided by unspoken aesthetic preferences, feelings, and our instinctive need to preserve something that appears beautiful, pretty, or sweet to us. Symbolism, storytelling and imagery therefor have material and very concrete effects on different spieces and individuals survival.

The seahorse is monogamous, and closely related to its partner, it is also particularly susceptible to small variations in temperatures and changes in the environment with its wide range of accessibility. These preconditions make it particularly challenging to protect this small creature in constructed preservation rooms, which in turn moves care back to the conservators.

The film is installed in a built in enclosed room within the museum, a black box with lowered ceiling and seating inside. A construction that serves as a frame for viewing the film in a undisturbed manner, with the possibility to emerge oneself in the feeling of being under water with the seahorses, also emphasised with the sound design and the film being showed in an endless loop. The entrance to the room is covered with black heavy fabric, to emphasise the feeling of entering the world of the animals habitate, and also choosing when to “leave it”.

- Intro text in quotation marks is taken from the essay “Care, Gender, and Survival: The Curious Case of the Seahorse” by Susanne Schmitt. This text is printed on the entrence of the installation for reading before entering.&#38;nbsp;

For her solo exhibition at the Drammens Museum, Hauge exhibited her latest videoworks The Boundary Object, and the videoinstallation&#38;nbsp;Labor of Love, alongside 11 new photoworks, a textile-based work, and seven short poems. Taking on themes of bodies and individuals in agriculture, power structures and the idea of nature, the works combined propose to rethink our position as the center of it all, and a way of looking across species, for what unites us rather than what divides us.&#38;nbsp;

Alongside Iselin Linstad Hauge´s exhibition, Iselins father&#38;nbsp;Ragnar Olaf Hauge, shows a new body of work with two large scale sculptures in steel, ceramic works, and new digital drawings.

Father and daughter where invited to present there works side by side in two solo shows, under a joint title “ Fra da til nå og alt forandres” (directly translated “From then until now, and everything changes”). The title plays on the aspect of generations and time , as well as the feeling of “the whole world changing” as soon as one acquires new aspect and knowledge about life.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>The whole body breathing
 4:30 min
(continuous loop) HD video with sound2017

“Sense the shape and form of your whole body as you settle. Feel a straight line, running from the top of the head, all the way down to a point between your heels. Sense the whole body lying in a straight line.” &#38;nbsp;(voiceover video)

The whole body breathing starts from an intersert in looking at one very basic form of movement that all vertebrates with lungs share; breathing. The soundtrack in the video is the sound of a constant breath from a person practicing an old breathing technique called Ujjayi. This is a diaphragmatic breath, employed in a variety of Taoist and Yoga practices. Ujjayi is said to be similar to the breathing of a new-born baby before the prana begins to flow out into the world's attractions. The soundtrack this breath makes is accompanied by a voiceover reciting a text for entering Yoga Nidra, (yogic sleep) a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. In the video we see different farm animals, chicken and pigs, asleep, then waking up and looking straight into the camera.

Voice over:&#38;nbsp; - Sense the shape and form of your whole body as you settle. Feel a straight line, running from the top of the head, all the way down to a point between your heels. Sense the whole body lying in a straight line. Let the arms roll away from the sides of the body, and sense that space. And the feet and legs, a little bit apart. Sense that space. Sense the whole body lying in a straight line. Let the arms roll away from the sides of the body, and sense that space. Female voice: Be aware of the weight of the body, settling on to the floor. The whole body. Still. And heavy. And within that stillness, the gentle movement of the breath. Observe your natural breath. However and wherever you may feel it. Expand your awareness of breathing in to the whole body. The whole body breathing. The whole body breathing. The whole body breathing.

		<description>The Foreignness of Her, 4 minvideo with sound2012
Despite our patterns,
which are more regular than anything I share with another person,
she still feels unpredictable to me.

Despite our closeness,
I am occasionally thrilled, and even a bit scared,
by the foreignness of her.

(Text exerpt from video)
The Foreignness of Her consists of text and moving images, showing a waterbuck calf trapped inside a structure of high concrete walls. The calf shifts between standing completely still to walking back and forth, as if trying to find a way out, while the camera follows her every move closely. The walls are all too high, and there seems to be no exit. She gets increasingly restless while examining their height. The Foreignness of Her engages to contemplate our relation to living beings, other than our selves. Taking on themes of the potential understanding of something familiar that lies within the emotional closeness with the the nonhuman animal.

		<description>Untitled (human/meat)

A series of 9 photosEach image 100 x 60 cm

HUMAN AS PREDATOR

Untitled (Human / Meat) differs from Iselin Linstad Hauge's previous work with loud video installations, in that the picture is frozen, and everything we viewers experience or read is triggered only by the visual information. The minimal and pure aesthetic composition emphasizes every detail in such a way that the monochrome gray background gets as much weight as the portraits. It is not far between the mortuary pictures of Serrano and Linstad Hauge's photo series, where common key words are clarity and grotesque reality. A realistic and concrete portrait of man with his favorite meat. Man lined up and pictured. The look is apathetic. Clear and distant at the same time (for I will be indifferent). The structure, color, luster and shape of the pieces of meat emphasize similarities between the living and the dead portrayed. It is as if these two components go up in symbiosis. They become one. Lord and dog, or You are what you eat. One piece of meat may not be so much. It is first and foremost food. Nevertheless, there is something that emerges in Linstad Hauge's photographs that equates the flesh with any leading aesthetic object. Through its appearance, the flesh takes control and sets the premises for how man is perceived, and just that is a little disturbing.&#38;nbsp;
